Obituary for Louis J. 'Louie' Kroening

Louis J. ‘Louie’ Kroening, 85 of Altamont, died at 5:49 p.m., Monday, May 6, 2019 at his home, with his family by his side.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Altamont with Rev. Dr. James F. Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Altamont. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, May 14 at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont and for one hour prior to service time at the church. Memorials may be made to The Whoo Hoo Sisterhood, HSHS Hospice, Ballard Nature Center, or donor’s choice.

Louis Johann Kroening was born on Monday, March 19, 1934 in the Bethlehem Community to John and Lydia (Braasch) Kroening. He married Thelma L. Runge on October 16, 1955 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, St. Peter and they enjoyed over 57 years of marriage prior to her death on August 2, 2013. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Altamont and both the Choir and Men’s Choir and served in various other capacities over the years. He served on the Immanuel Lutheran School Board. He was a life-long farmer and was a member of the Effingham County Farm Bureau. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed bowling, softball, and fishing. He took pride in watching the kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids in their sporting activities and was a dedicated St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Louis is survived by: his son, Jerry (Donna J.) Kroening, Altamont; daughters, Donna L. Kroening, Altamont and Sandra (Jeff) May, Lake Jackson, Texas; brother, Gilbert (Jean) Kroening, Carbondale; sisters, Mildred (Harold) Wolf, Altamont and Helen Miller, Effingham; grandchildren, Amber (Nathan) Schnarre, rural Altamont, Lucas (Jennifer) Kroening, Altamont, Dillon (Kristen) May, Houston, Texas and Zachary May, Hampton, Virginia, great-grandchildren, Brayden, Adilyn, and Liam Schnarre, Hayden Summers, Preston and Griffin Kroening, Owen and Lucy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother-in-law, Glen Miller.
